16.9Me [9] (8 pts.) How Hot? If a ³He nucleus gets close enough to a Li nucleus, the two will fuse to form two He nuclei and one proton, releasing 16.9 MeV in the process. (a) Estimate the size of the Coulomb energy barrier that must be overcome in order to get these nuclei to fuse. (b) Estimate the temperature at which the average kinetic energy of the nuclei will be sufficient to initiate fusion. (c) Describe in some detail a technique being used on Earth to achieve such high temperatures and, hence, to initiate fusion. Note: the technique that you describe need not work for 3 He - Li fusion in particular.
