3. Many applications in trigonometry involve bearing, an important idea in navigation and
surveying. Bearing is used to give directions. There are two common systems used to express
bearing. When a single angle is given, such as 164°, bearing is measured in a clockwise direction
from due north. Use this idea to solve the following problem.
A fishing trawler leaves port at 5:30 a.m., and sails on a course of 300° at 10 knots. A Coast
Guard patrol boat leaves the same port at 6:00 a.m., and sails on a course of 220° at 18 knots.
At 8:30 a.m., the trawler sends a distress signal. How far is the patrol boat from the trawler, and
what course must it sail in order to reach the trawler if the trawler can no longer move?
