QUESTION 2-Strain Transformation & Strain Rosettes A strain test is carried out on the crane depicted on the right. A rectangular strain rosette is positioned and aligned on the boom at position B as shown such that gauge a is aligned with the axis of the boom. Under a certain test loading, the following strains were captured: 45° = 114.1 [um/m] 80 131.5 [um/m] Ee = 331 [um/m] a) Determine the principal strains at point B. b) Determine the principal stresses in [MPa] at the point where these readings were taken if the material used for the link is A36 structural steel. c) Calculate the factor of safety for the linkage using the von Mises theory of elastic failure. The codes of practice for this type of component specify a minimum safety factor of 2.0. With this specific material, and taking the loading during the test as being typical, is this design acceptable or not? d) Using your calculated values of principal strain from (a), construct a fully labeled Mohr's Strain Circle on the graph paper supplied in Appendix D: Mohr's Strain Circle. Clearly show the positions on the circle of the three strain gauges as well as the principal planes. For all, show only the linear strain values. 45° 459 B [18]
