SECTION B Question B1 A car is parked on a street with its handbrake engaged (active). Take the mass of the car as 1450kg, the static coefficient of friction in the brakes while they are fully engaged as 0.42 and the dynamic coefficient of friction as 0.35. Treat the car as an object and the coefficient of friction as the overall coefficient of friction for the system. a) Name two variables that affect the coefficient of friction. (2 marks) b) Draw a diagram of the forces acting on the body represented in figure i) (2 marks) c) Determine the Force required to overcome static friction if the car is parked on a horizontal surface as shown in i) (4 marks) d) Draw a diagram of the forces acting in the body represented in figure ii) (3 marks) e) Determine the frictional force required to keep the car at rest if the car is resting on a surface 10° to the horizontal as shown in figure ii) (6 marks) f) At what ramp inclination would there be difficulty in keeping the car stationary? (4 marks) g) Imagine the car is restarting its motion, but the handbrake was still engaged (active). Determine the Force required to push the car up the hill from rest assuming a slope of 10°, as displayed in Figure ii) (4 marks) Figure i) Figure ii) (Total marks for QB1 = 25 marks)
