Problem 1 The design for a connection between a bar and the support is as shown below. However, due to installation errors, the front bolt (closest to the point of application of the load) does not carry any of the load. The ultimate shear strength of the material of the bolts is 50 ksi, and a factor of safety of 2 is required with respect to fracture. The bolts are in double shear. (a) Determine the minimum bolt diameter required to support an applied load P = 360 kips. (b) Determine the maximum load P that can be supported if the diameter of each bolt is 2 in.
