One important consideration in automobile dynamics is the moment of inertia of the wheel/tire combination. To measure the moment of inertia, we mount a wheel/tire on a horizontal axle with little friction so that it can undergo pendulum motion. Assume the diameter of the tire is 25 inches and weighs 55 pounds and that we attach a 5 pound weight to the tread. We then observe the period of the pendulum swing as 1.7 seconds.
