a) A semi-circular pipe carries a fluid of specific gravity (S.G.) 0.65 as shown in Figure Q2. The pipe tapers from 100 mm diameter at the inlet to 40 mm diameter at the outlet nozzle section. The pressure at the wider end is 80 kPa. If the mass flow rate is 750 kg/min, calculate the following: i) The inlet and outlet velocities of the water in the pipe. [5 Marks] [5 Marks] ii) The height of the pipe, H. iii) The magnitude of the exerted force, F in the nozzle. [4 Marks] d=40mm -Nozzle H |D=100mm Figure Q2 Gravity Fluid flow Mean radius R=1.5 m b) The fuselage of an aeroplane consists of the following three layers: the outer layer made from aluminium alloy of a thickness 20 mm, the middle layer having convection heat transfer coefficient, h of 10 W/m² °C and an inner layer of plastic of a thickness 40 mm. If the temperature outside the aeroplane is -60 degrees centigrade at a high altitude and the inside of the fuselage is to be maintained at +20 degrees centigrade, find: i) The heat loss per unit area (Note: Area = 1 m²) [8 Marks] [3 marks] ii) The temperature at the common surfaces. Thermal conductivity, k values are: Aluminium alloy = 4 W/m °C Plastic layer = 0.5 W/m °C
