Q3. Statically determinate or indeterminate beam analysis by the stiffness method (75 marks) a) Determine the global stiffness matrix of the beam shown in Fig. 3. Assume support at 1 is a slider that can slide along the 1 direction and node 2 is a fixed support. Indicate the degrees-of freedom in all the stiffness matrices. El is constant. (10 marks) (20 marks) b) Determine the beam reactions at the supports. Show all calculations. c) Draw the BMD of the beam on the compression side showing the salient values. What is the maximum bending moment of the beam? Draw the deflected shape of the beam (10 marks) d) Solve the problem using the Strand7. Choose the values of L and w provided in Table 1 based on the last digit of your student ID. Show the model with all the nodes and element numbers and boundary conditions. Display the deflected shape and BMD. (10 marks) e) Show a table comparing the stiffness method (manual calculations) calculations of the all the reactions and the maximum bending moment values with those of Strand7 results. Comment on the comparisons of the values between the two. (5 marks) f) If the slider is replaced by a fixed support, explain how do you solve the problem. Show the force and displacement vectors.
