Question 1 (a) A simply supported beam with an effective span of 6 m is uniformly loaded with w kN/m. The beam has a doubly-reinforced rectangular cross section profile as shown in Figure 1(a). The characteristic compressive strength of concrete is 25 MPa. For steel, it has a characteristic yield strength of 500 MPa and a Young's modulus of 200 GPa. Calculate w based on Eurocode recommendations for ultimate limit state design. (14) (b) The beam is revised to have a singly-reinforced flanged section as shown in Figure 1(b). It now needs to support an ultimate design load of 100 kN/m. Based on the Eurocode recommendations for ultimate limit state design, determine, using the same concrete and steel properties given in (a), (i) the minimum allowable flange breadth br to ensure a singly-reinforced section; and (10) (ii) the size and number of tension reinforcement required if the section has the minimum br. (6) Considerations for shear and detailing requirements are not required. bf * 50 100 2H10 500 400 3H32 300 All dimensions in mm (a) t 250 All dimensions in mm (b)
