Aboriginal Midwifery Program. Global health case studies: A compilation from PPHS 511: Fundamentals of Global Health. McGill University. https://www.mcgill.ca/globalhealth/file ... health/cas estudybook_final1.pdf Case Study 2: A Safe Motherhood Project in Nigeria Nigeria has about 2% of the world's population but accounts for 10% of the world's maternal deaths. The authors suggest that by providing pregnant women with cell phones as part of the Safe Motherhood Project, their attendance at health clinics improved, and they were thereby provided with necessary health information. This ultimately improved overall healthcare services to pregnant women and decreased maternal mortality rates in 10 participating health facilities. Pregnancy complications were lower (in the project area as compared with the control area without cell phones). The program's success was due to increased use of healthcare facilities for pregnant women with complications. Case Study 2 Questions 1. How do you think access to cell phones improved attendance at prenatal clinics? 2. Why do you think that access to cell phones decreased maternal mortality rates? Data from Oyeyemi, S., & Wynn, R. (2014). Giving free cell phones to pregnant women and improving services
