Surgical Conscience Case Study
Kathy is a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and practices
at Goodrich Memorial Hospital. She was assigned to scrub a total
knee arthroplasty in OR #1 with Dr. Nina Johnston, a well-respected
orthopedic surgeon. Kathy was also precepting a surgical technology
student, Max, from the local college. During the surgical scrub,
she noticed that the student briefly dropped his hands below his
elbows. As he turned off the water and stepped back, Kathy stopped
him and instructed him to re-scrub; she also asked if he knew why.
Max identified his error, apologized, and began a new scrub. During
the setup, the circulator was asked to retrieve the battery for the
drill from the autoclave; Kathy asked Max to take the battery when
it arrived. As the circulator entered the room, Kathy noticed that
she looked away when the phone rang and the battery touched her
sleeve. Max proceeded to take the battery and walk toward the back
table. Kathy stopped Max and asked if he noticed that the battery
touched the circulator's sleeve. Max stated, "Sure I did, but this
is the real world, not school, things are not perfect. It was just
a quick touch, not a big deal."
