(b) In the redox chemistry of transition-metal complexes, briefly explain why bond length equilibration is a necessary pre-condition of self-exchange reactions, for example in self-exchange between an equimolar mixture of [Fe(H₂O6]2+ and [Fe(H₂O)]³+. (3 marks) (c) In the reduction of [Co(NH3)s(N3)]2+ with [Fe(H₂O6]2* in acidic solution, a transient red colour appears during the reaction, which fades away to give as products: [Co(H₂O)]2+, [Fe(H₂O)]³+, N3 and NH4. The corresponding reduction of [Co(NH3)]³+ by [Fe(H2O6]2+ shows no transient colour. Propose mechanisms for these two reactions consistent with these observations. (4 marks)
