As a pharmacy manager, you want to resource lactose for your
capsule compounding. The lactose provider advised you that the
following brands of lactose are available:
Pharmatose 50M (from DMV-Fonterra Excipients)
Pharmatose 450M (from DMV-Fonterra Excipients)
To select the lactose brand suitable for your compounding, you
are required to answer a couple of questions:
A. calculate the compressibility index for each brand of
lactose.
B. Explaining your reason, select the lactose brand with better
powder flowability.
C. Describe a suitable method to test the powder flowability
once it arrives in your pharmacy. You only have access to a funnel
and a holder in the pharmacy. Your answer should include the
criteria to classify the powder flowability.
D. Assuming you have received a brand of lactose that has poor
powder flowability, identify and briefly discuss TWO possible
methods that can be used in your compounding lab to improve the
flowability of the powder. Note: Use your judgement to identify
only the methods that can be conducted using simple techniques in a
pharmacy setting.
