Q1b 2021
A temporary excavation is to be made to a depth of 8m in a 20m
thick deposit of firm saturated clay that overlies horizontal
bedrock. The clay has average undrained shear strength of 44kN/m2
and a saturated density of 2.12Mg/m3.
(1) If the side slopes are formed at 30 to the horizontal, use
Taylor’s stability chart to determine the short-term factor of
safety of the excavation slopes.
(2) Use the chart to estimate the slope angle at which the sides of
the excavation would be just about to fail.
