Please answer the following questions. Show all your work - I should be able to clearly follow your work and understand your final design recommendations. 1) For the beam shown in Figure 8.1 (below), determine the required reinforcement and No. 3 stirrup spacing if the beam is to support a live load of 2 k/ft and a dead load of 1.25 k/ft. Normal concrete of strength 4,000psi and GR60 steel are to be used. This beam will be exposed to weather. Note: to start, assume reinforcement will be between No. 6 and No. 18 bars. W 16" ?? 14" 20' Figure 8.1. Reinforced concrete beam with unknown number of reinforcement bars. 2) A 12"x16" tied column is composed of four No. 9 longitudinal bars and No. 3 ties. Assume that the specified compressive strength of concrete is 3,000 psi and that Grade 40 bars will be used. Determine: a. Maximum axial load that can be supported by this column. b. The required tie spacing for this column. c. Minimum length of the longitudinal reinforcement. 3) A 16" diameter reinforced concrete column uses No. 3 spirals and has a concrete compressive strength of 4,000 psi. You want to use at least four reinforcement bars of GR60 steel to enable the column to support a dead load of 150 kip and a live load of 200 kip. What bar diameter do you choose? (Note: only asking you to check the axial load for this column).
