CASE STUDY ON FACILITY LAYOUT DESIGN In the production line of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, a chocolate is produced by accomplishing following activities: A. B, C, D, E, F, G, H and I. The product is finished after further packaging and storing works. C and Gactivities are applied twice and they need unique machines. Because of that the flow of production is not linear. It is given below: T Fig.1. Current flow Recently, some problems occur in process because of increase in WIP, changes on cycle time etc. So, Willy Wonka decided to revise the lay out. In existing lay out, there were big spaces and all areas including packaging and production were together. Now, Willy Wonka wants to seperate the production from all auxiliary departments. (From A to H, it is called "production", it has totally 470 m2. the remaining operation is titled finishing (I), it has totally 210 m2). There are also some machines which have similar features for example "C and D", and "F and I have similar features. Existing lay out is given in Fig. 2. And there is no space limitation for new facility. Fishing to Packaging Offer Fig. 2. Existing lay out. Questions: 1) Which criteria should be considered by Wonka when revising the existing layout? 2) What is your empirical solution to this problem? What is your improvement on the total layout? And what do you recommend for the placement of each operation in the production area? Please figure and explain.
