Leader Power:
Xiang is the Chief Financial Officer for a small regional bank. He has recently been awarded her MBA
with a major in change management. He is obviously very proud of his achievement and ensures
that everyone on the senior management team knows of his achievement.
During meeting of this group, he is constantly referring to her course and is always seeking to link
the theory that he learnt to the realities of what is happening within the bank. Whilst some of his
input is regarded highly by his colleagues, some, over time, are getting somewhat frustrated with
him as they don’t know whether he is focused on his position or focused on self-promotion.
Questions:
1. What is the power that he attempting to exert and how?
2. What power is he not considering in behaving the way he is and what impact do you
think this could have on the future of the Team’s functions?
3. As the CEO of the organisation, what would you do to address this apparent problem
within this team?
