In Chapter 17, “The Eight Questions,” the author discusses eight
(8) questions that are designed to elicit a patient’s “exploratory
model” relating to illness (pg 260). What do you think of these
eight questions, and of Fadiman’s conjectured answers for the Lee
family? Is there an instance in the book where a healthcare
professional asked the Lees any of these questions? Arthur
Kleinman, the author of these eight questions, also had three
suggestions for Lia’s pediatricians. What do you think of
Kleinman’s suggestions? Where and how could these suggestions have
been applied to Lia’s care? What resources or support would have
helped the health care professionals caring for Lia put these
suggestions into practice? Please use specific examples from the
book.
