1. (a) Sodium nitrate is a common preservative utilized in
processed meats. Industrially, it is prepared by the neutralization
reaction of nitric acid and sodium carbonate. In an experiment
utilizing this method, 4 grams of sodium nitrate was obtained which
corresponded to 73 % yield. Given that 75 mL of nitric acid was
reacted with excess sodium carbonate, determine the % w/v of nitric
acid used. Describe how you would prepare the nitric acid solution
used from a 1 M nitric acid solution. (10 marks) (b) Solution R
contains the mildly soluble hydroxide of trivalent metal X as well
as the highly soluble bromide of X. 25 mL of R required 20.65 mL of
0.0109 M sulfuric acid for complete neutralization. Given that the
molar solubility of the hydroxide in pure water is 0.014 M,
determine the molarity of X in solution R. (10 marks)
