Mrs. Hand asks you to feed the baby while she reads to David. Describe the proper way to feed the baby. (position, burping, etc.) Assisting the Family When you try to give David his breakfast the first morning, he refuses to eat and throws his food on the floor. Is this normal? Why? i. ii. How would you handle this situation? iii. Can a PSW discipline another person's child? You decide to take David and his baby brother for a walk so Mrs. Hand can sleep While on the walk David stops every two minutes to look at objects on the sidewalk on grass. When you try to hurry David along he has a temper tantrum, throwing himsel on the ground crying and kicking. i. Is stopping to look at everything normal for a 2 year old? ii. How would you deal with the temper tantrum?
2. You are assigned to the Case family. Mr. Case is a working husband and father of a thirteen had an exacerbation - a severe attack that has caused loss of function in both lower limbs and his left arm. His right arm (his dominant arm) is weak. Mrs. Case is 33 and has just recentie returned home from hospital following shoulder surgery. Both parents require some assistance with personal care, as well as help caring for their daughter, Gail. Assisting the Family, Gail has just leared to walk alone. Although both parents can pick Gail up, it's difficult. As well, it's impossible to hold her if she squirms or resists. The Cases have never received assistance in the past. There is one relative living close by, but she is older and has some serious health problems. They have many friends, but none upon whom they might call for help with personal care. The Cases are both professionals. Mrs. Case has been a health professional for a number of years. In particular, Mrs. Case finds accepting help to be extremely difficult. Mr. Case is adamant that the homemaker is to care for the infant only. Your assignment clearly indicates that you are to assist the parents as well as the child with care. a. How would you find out what Mrs. Case expects from you? b. What do you think Mr. Case expects of you? What would the PSW's role be? Why? C. d. What problems do you expect you might encounter working for the Cases?
