1. On last year's homework, I showed a 2-step method in which a primary alkyl bromide can be extended by one carbon and converted into a carboxylic acid by converting the alkyl bromide to a Grignard reagent and then reacting with carbon dioxide (CO). There is a second pathway to the same product involving a nitrile intermediate. Show the reagents (for both steps) and intermediate in this sequence. (3 pts) Mg 1. ORC=0 OH MgBr 2. H20 R Br OH RBC RTH 2. Provide a multiple step synthesis for the transformation shown below. Make sure that both aromatic rings in the product are synthesized from the given benzaldehyde starting material. In other words, synthesize two different pieces starting with benzaldehyde for both and then put them together to make the product given. (6 pts) ON осн.
