A solid shaft of 100 mm diameter has a strain gauge mounted at 60 degrees to the shaft axis at point O, as shown in the graph below. In service an axial force and a torque of 10 kN·m are applied to the shaft and the strain gauge reads - 500 x10 6. The shaft is made of steel and the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of 200 GPa and 0.3, respectively. (1) Calculate the value of the axial force P. (2) Calculate the normal stress and shear stress on the plane indicated by the surface normal n. (3) Calculate the principal stresses and the maximum shear stress of point 0. (4) Express these stresses on the Mohr's circle. (5) Express these stresses on an element.
