Problem 3. Design of Transmission Shaft + Strain Energy The solid shaft AE (with modulus of rigidity of 11603 ksi) rotates at 600 rpm and transmits 60 hp from the motor M to machine tools connected to gears G and H. A 40 hp is taken off at gear G and 20 hp is taken off at gear H. (1 hp = 6600 in- lb/sec, 1 rpm = 1/60 Hz) Sin The transmission shaft AE must be designed based on strain energy of 13.9 lb-in. Based on this requirement, determine the minimum diameter (in inches) of the shaft.
