Question 2 (15%) a A solid shaft of 80 mm diameter has a strain gauge mounted at 60° to the shaft axis at point o, as shown in Figure 2. In service an axial force and a torque of 10 kN m are applied to the shaft and the strain gauge reads - 500 x 10". The shaft is made of steel with the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of 200 GPa and 0.3, respectively. (1) Calculate the value of the axial force P. (2) Calculate the normal stress and shear stress on the plane indicated by the surface normal n. (3) Calculate the principal stresses and the maximum shear stress of point 0. (4) Express these stresses on the Mohr's circle. (5) Express these stresses on an element.
