4. (a) Explain why 'simple bending theory' may not give sufficiently accurate results when applied to predict stresses in a 'curved beam problem. [2 marks] (b) A curved beam formed from a symmetrical 1 - Section of cross-section dimensions shown in Figure Q4, is subjected to two equal and opposite forces P. The radius of the centroidal axis of the curved segment is 125 mm (1) Using 'curved beam theory' determine the radius of the neutral axis in the curved segment. [8 Marks] (ii) Hence calculate the maximum value of the forces P which can be applied if the maximum tensile stress in the beam is not to exceed 300 MNm-2 [9 Marks] (iii) Compare your answer to (i) above with that predicted by the simple bending theory and comment critically.
