Program evaluations use the social research approach to
systematically investigate the effectiveness of social intervention
programs in methods that can be modified to their political and
organizational environments intended to inform social action as
ways to improve social problems. However, failure to assess program
performance with a reasonable level of validity may intend to
falsify the program accomplishments or deny it work toward better
successes for which it should be accountable, so before carrying
out an evaluation, it needs an accurate description of the program
characteristics to obtain a successful result. When conducting
social research at a higher scientific level, the main resources
required exceed those available for evaluation research and
practice. Any good project evaluation usually involves the
following five main areas. They include: 1) The need for the
program, 2) the program design, 3) its implementation and service
delivery, 4) its impact, and 5) its efficiency.
The importance of program evaluation and the role it plays in
research and practice. It is a vital tool for public health
practitioners who wants to strengthen the quality of their programs
and improve problems for the population they serve, also answers
basic questions about a program’s effectiveness, efficiency, and
evaluation data and how researchers can use these questions
(feedback) to help improve the overall program services. The goal
of program evaluation is to use the information to improve programs
(CDC.gov). Evaluation is an essential process of a developmental
guidance and counseling program; it also ensures accountability.
Program evaluation has helped assess the values, activities, and
health staff involved in decision-making about the future of the
program. According to Gary P (2015), program evaluation provides
the information required to examine the extent to which how a
program has been carried out and determine whether the project is
achieving its desire outcomes as planned before. Program
evaluation provides public health professionals the means to find
out what works well for them and vice versa to help you focus on
vital components for the program model and beneficial to
participants and volunteers as well. On the other hand, knowing
what does not work well allows the public health practitioners by
enabling them to improve, worked on, and strengthen the service
delivery models
As an evaluator, sharing findings within the community can serve
as a potential outreach tool for attracting collaborative partners,
recruiting participants and volunteers, and building trust with
families and community members (Metz A., 2007).
Doing the assessment tool was challenging scoring myself because
they are some domains that I have not heard. Overall, I feel
knowledgeable and quite comfortable with my knowledge and ability
to apply the skill that I have learned in other classes to the
following domains, such as Analytical/Assessment Skills, Policy
Development/Program Planning Skills, Communication Skills,
Community Dimensions of Practice Skills, Public Health Sciences
Skills and Management Skills. The assessment tools will enable me
by giving me the opportunities to display my knowledge and skills
in those domains that need improvement, such as Cultural Competency
Skills, Leadership and Systems Thinking Skills, and financial
planning, which are still new to me.
