18.18 A 20 MGD (75.7 MLD) conventional filtration plant applies free chlorine as a disinfectant. The chlorine has a contact time of 25 min under peak flow conditions of 20 MGD (75.7 MLD). The pH of the water is 7.5 and the water temperature is 10°C (50°C). Determine (a) the log removal of Giardia cysts inactivation that must be achieved by chlorination, (b) the CT'value provided by the contact time of 25 minutes under an assumed chlorine residual of 1 mg/L; and (c) the required CT value for the water treatment system.
