You are a nurse at the local Emergency Department (ED). You have
been notified that there were reports of an active shooter at the
indoor circus that has been in town. The majority of the attendees
are women and children. The shooter reportedly shot a couple of the
animals, was apprehended before he shot any person.
Due to the crowded venue, there are several mild to moderate
injuries (cuts, bruises, broken bones) related to everyone trying
to get out of the building. Your biggest concern is the
psychological trauma that has been experienced by all involved.
Your co-worker has never dealt with this sort of situation before
and you are asked by your supervisor to brief your co-worker on
some of the expected behaviors for the different age groups that
will be showing up at the ED in the next few hours.
Please provide in detail the expected behaviors that
might be seen for Infants and toddlers, preschool children,
school-aged children, and adolescents experiencing a trauma such as
described above. What special considerations are
to be given for pregnant women?
