A new multi-storey building is going to be constructed close to an old building. A plan view and an elevation view of the foundation of the two buildings are given in Figure 1. The old building applies a uniform pressure of 500 kPa at the base of its foundation. The uniform pressure under the new building is 1000 kPa. The foundation soil consists of a compressible layer of normally consolidated clay to a total depth of 5m which overlays stiff bedrock. The water table is at the ground level. The clay layer has the following properties: Compression Index: Co=0.5 Recompression Index: C =0.10 Void ratio: e = 0.8 Unit weight: Y = 20 kN/m Calculate the differential settlement of the old building that occurs between points A and B a long time after construction of the new building. Use 1-D consolidation theory employing a one-point settlement calculation based on the condition of a point at the middle of the clay layer. 5m 5m 10m 500kPa 1000kPa Old building New building Clay layer 10m Bedrock ELEVATION 5m 5m 10m B ---- 5m 10m pld building New building
