Question 1 A composite slab is made of 50 mm thick concrete that is sandwiched between two 5 mm thick steel plates as shown in Figure Q1. The slab has dimensions of 2000 mm and 500 mm in the x and s directions. The elastic modulus of concrete and steel are to be taken as 35 GPa and 200 GPa respectively. Please do the following: (a) Determine the deformation in the y direction if a stress of 20 MPa is applied to the slab in the y direction as shown in Figure Q1(1) (b) Determine the deformation in the x direction if a stress of 20 MPa is applied to the same slab in the x direction as shown in Figure Q1(ii) 2000 mm Oy = 20 MPa - 0 20 MPa Oz = 20 MPa 5 mm 50 mm Concrete Steel plates 5 mm 11 Oy= 20 MPa (1) Composite slab is loaded in the vertical direction (u) Composite slab is loaded in the horizontal direction Figure Q1 - The composite plate in Question 1 (not to scale)
