On page 53 of The Florence Prescription, the fictitious Florence
Nightingale states,
“In 1854, it would have been so much easier for me to remain at
home in the quiet comfort of Lea Hurst. I could have lived out the
life of a pampered spinster, whiling away the hours with my beloved
books and long walks in the English countryside. It was a much
harder road, the one I took to Scutari. I had to forget the desires
of Florence Nightingale and remember the needs of the soldiers I
was called to serve. That, dear Sarah, is the path of the nurse.”
Is it still true today that the profession of nursing is one of
self-sacrifice? Contrast this idea with the modern notion of
“work-life balance.”
