1- Pediatric patient handle drugs differently than adult. the drugs actions vary greatly and sensitivity receptor also vary with age. the nurse should assure that proper dosage calculation are done based on skin qualities (thin/thick, permeable), stomach acidity, lungs state, body temperature and liver and kidney maturity. the nurse need also to use the right method of calculation, dosage based on body weight is the most common. to do this calculation, the nurse need to check the drug order, check the recommended manufacturer dosage, available form then determine the weight of the patient in kg and use current drug reference to determine actual dosage. for infant, toddler, and preschooler the nurse need to briefly explain the procedure to the parent or caregiver. for school age children, the nurse will explain the procedure to both the parent and the kid and provide comfort.
