Method: Introduce anthracene (2 g), amyl nitrite (3 g) and
dioxane (20 ml) into a round bottomed flask fitted with a reflux
condenser and heat to reflux. Dissolve 2-aminobenzoic acid
(anthranilic acid) (5 g) in dioxane (20 ml) and add half of this
solution dropwise over 20 min into the boiling reaction mixture.
Introduce a further 3 g of amyl nitrite to the flask, continue
boiling and add the remainder of the anthranilic acid solution over
a further 20 min period. Then add methanol (10 ml) and dil. sodium
hydroxide (40 ml) and reflux for a further 10 min. Filter off the
solid, wash with water and ice-cold methanol-water (1:4) and allow
to dry as far as possible in the funnel. To remove any unreacted
anthracene, mix maleic anhydride (2 g) with the product and
dissolve in dioxane (10 ml). Boil the mixture under reflux for 5
minutes, adding a little more solvent if any solid remains. Cool,
add ethanol (10 ml) and dil. sodium hydroxide solution (50 ml) and
stir the mixture. Cool the solution, filter off the triptycene and
recrystallise from cyclohexane. Record its mass, melting point and
percentage yield. Acidify the filtrate with conc. hydrochloric acid
to recover anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylic acid, obtain the mass of
the dry compound and record the melting point.

Hi, Could you please provide mechanisms of actions
in details for both reactions the above reactions based on the
method provided above. TIA!
