Question 1: You are lucky enough to have observation time on the Jeremy Webb Space telescope. You take the following image, and would like to classify the image as either a spiral or elliptical galaxy, depending on its properties. Figure 1: Your Jeremy Webb Space Telescope galaxy image for classification a) Describe the galaxy you see in the image. Describe the galaxy in terms of its disk, bulge, and halo, if they are present. [2 marks]
b) What type of galaxy do you think this is? Use your observations in the first part of the question to justify your classification. [2 marks] c) Do you think this galaxy has undergone merging recently? Why or why not? [2 marks]
d) After looking through archival data, you discover that this galaxy had its rotation curve mea- sured by Vera Rubin. Do you expect the galaxy's rotation curve to increase, stay constant, or decrease with distance from the centre of the galaxy? Why? Is this behaviour consistent with how the density of stars and gas changes with distance from the centre of the galaxy? Explain your reasoning. [3 marks]
