Ammunition turrets were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries
for dropping lead.
melted inside tall towers to form balls for bullets. the lead
solidified during the fall and normally dropped into the water to
cool. Many of these
towers were built in the state of New York. Suppose an ammunition
turret was
built at latitude 42° N and that the lead falls a distance of 27m.
determine
(a) the direction and direction of the deflection of the bullets
(when they land) due to the
Coriolis force;
(b) how far from the direct vertical did the bullets land?
Justify your answers. In item (b) a numerical answer is not
required. One
expression for the distance (with all steps justified) would
suffice.
