QUESTION 1 (25 marks) i. Concrete with a compressive strength, fc, of 31.5 MPa is required for construction of the columns of an office building at UTech. Rounded gravel, of 19 mm nominal maximum size will be utilized in the production process. No statistical data is available. Dry rodded density of the coarse aggregate = 1400kg/m Fineness modulus of the sand is 2.5 Relative density of aggregate is 2.75 Relative density for the sand is 2.4 Relative density of cement is 3.12 a. a. Find the water/cement ratio that is required to produce the concrete. (8 Marks) b. Select the minimum suitable slump for the concrete and calculate the water that is required to produce 6 m' of this concrete. (6 Marks) c. Compute the quantity of coarse aggregate required for 6 m' of concrete. (5 Marks) d. Compute the quantity of sand required for 6 m' of concrete. (6 Marks)
