3. a) For the bolted connection shown in the figure below, determine the maximum value for P, by determining the capacity of the connection, considering only the bearing capacity of the bolts and shear. There are four (4) 7/8-in. bolts as shown. Assume A36 steel for the tension member and gusset plate. Use LRFD analysis. (20 pts.) b) Using the capacity found in part a), analyze to determine whether an equivalent welded connection can be created. Use E70 electrodes and LRFD design. Assume weld strength controls and base metal strength does not need to be checked.
