A drainage ditch must be designed to carry a peak flow of 1.5 m/s along 900 m. The topography is described in the figure bellow, where water discharged at location 0 as a free overfall. The ditch to be lined with concrete (finished). The maximum right-of-way available is 3.5 m. The maximum depth of excavation allowed is 1.5 m to avoid encountering rock. Maximum ditch side slopes of 2:1. 1) Determine the dimension of the ditch. For safety factor water surface level at the peak flow should be at least 10 cm lower than the bank elevation (freeboard =10 cm). 2) After the ditch was finished a road crossing the ditch was needed at station 220 m. The road is 7 m width. Design the culvert that will carry the peak discharge under the roads.
