Algebra can be a very abstract subject. For most of you, this subject tends to be quite aloof, but algebra touches our lives in a very real way, in the disparate areas of sport, finance, architecture, biology, psychology, and many other disciplines, too many to mention all of them. Many applications abound. Here are a few formulas that were mentioned in the first video: FORMULA INTERPRETATION APPLICATION(S) c = πd circumference of a circle with architecture, diameter d and engineering, radius r (note 2r = agriculture d) A = xr2 landscape design, area of circle with manufacturing, radius r architecture, biology surface area of a manufacturing, S = 2 r (r + h) right circular engineering, car cylinder design a? + b2 = 2 relates the sides of a right triangle with sides of geometry, length a and b and physics, hypotenuse c. astronomy, design (The Pythagorean Theorem) View Discussion
For this discussion topic, 1. define a function (could be just in words but the use of constants, coefficients, and variables is okay, too). (5 points) 2. Most importantly, describe what application(s) your formula may have in our lives, and indicate why. (5 points) For example, I'm a SD Padres baseball fan and I'd like to know what the opposing team's OPS (On-base percentage Plus Slugging percentage) is on a two-strike count. OPS is an important analytic that many teams use to gauge their run production. If this OPS analytic is too high (say above 80% whenever the Padres' pitcher already has a two-strike count against the opposing batter), then the pitching coach may want to alert his pitchers of a mitigating strategy (such as using fewer fastballs in this situation). If the coach can find an effective strategy, then that should be reflected in a higher winning percentage over a season of 162 games. The coach may want to collect data over the season to test the hypothesis that this strategy is working, that is, the new strategy results in a gain in wins (and possibly a play-off spot at the end of the season).
