3. A flexible pavement for an urban interstate highway is to be designed using the 1993 AASHTO guide procedure to carry a design ESAL of 2 x 106. It is estimated that the pavement structure will be exposed to moisture levels approaching saturation for 5% of the time and it will take one day to drain the water. The following additional information is available: • M, value of base course material = 25,000 psi M, value of subbase course material = 12,000 psi • M, value of subgrade material = 6,000 psi • Reliability level (R)= 95% Standard deviation (So) = 0.3 Initial serviceability index pi = 4.0 . . • Terminal serviceability index pt = 2.5 • Resilient modulus of asphalt concrete at 68°F = 450,000 psi Determine a suitable pavement structure.
