A wind project developer has proposed to deploy a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) with a hub height of 90 m and a power coefficient of 20%. He states that the turbine can produce 2MW. The wind speed at 10 m is 5 m/s and the site is in a region with wooden ground with many trees where the friction coefficient of the terrain is 0.25. a) Assess the effectiveness of the proposal. [10 marks ] b) Assuming that tower height cannot exceed 120 m at the said site, what should be the rotor diameter in order to generate 2MW with a power coefficient of 0.25 ? [7 marks] c) What should be the recommended revolutions per minute of the rotor in part 3 b ) to achieve optimum power transfer? [4 marks] d) Discuss which control mechanisms may be put in place to optimize power output from the rotor. [4 marks]
