The following questions are for Lab Exercise 6 Hypothetically, an earthquake with Richter scale 7.0 took place in Midwest region of the United States on a particular day. Geologists approved that this earthquake was related to the New Madrid Fault. The earthquake's epicenter was located at downtown St Louis (Latitude 39 N. Longitude 90W), which was calculated based on the seismic waves received by the following seismic stations. Station 1: 2000 miles from St Louis Station 2: 1600 miles from St Louis Station 3: 2750 miles from St Louis Use all the applicable figures in Lab 6 to answer the following questions. Questions 1-4 are related to the same earthquake with epicenter located in St. Louis. 1. If P waves arrived at the Station 2 at 3:00pm, when did the S-waves arrive at this particular seismic station? Please explain. (15 points)
- Enter ↑ Shift Delete End Down Home 1 End 0 Ins 5 2. Assuming that both P and S-waves traveled at a constant velocity from the epicenter to the seismic stations. When did this earthquake take place? Please explain. (15 points) 3. Plot the location of the epicenter (38.5N, 90W) on Figure 6.6 in Lab Exercise 6. Given that Station 1 is located at 48N latitude, please use this figure to find out the approximate longitude of this seismic station. Please explain. (15 points) 4. At which of the three seismic stations did the seismograph record lowest amplitude of the surface waves? Please explain. (15 points). 5. Assuming that S-waves of an earthquake reached Chicago at 8am on Monday, October 5, 2019, when did the P waves from this earthquake reach Chicago from the epicenter 2500 miles from Chicago? Please explain. (15 points). What is the most important evidence to support the theory that most earthquakes are associated with the interactions of tectonic plates? Explain your answer (15 points). m
