III. Case Study Brenda, age 22, diagnosed at age 15 with a learning disability and at age 21 with lupus, comes to see you as a rehabilitation counselor for career exploration and also, perhaps, for some ideas on how to deal with problems she faces that are associated with living at home with her family. She has been working in retail sales for a large department store and is attending evening classes at a technical community college for a certificate as a nursing assistant in a psychiatric facility. She struggles in school but is receiving passing grades and wonders if the medical field would be suitable for her. Brenda states that her work history for 3 years has been excellent and that she is a dependable worker and has received good work evaluations. Brenda believes that her career uncertainty is aggravated by prob- lems associated with living with her family. She would like to move out and live with a girlfriend but has many fears surrounding taking this step. She also says that her religion is extremely important to her and that she feels a great deal of guilt over the conflict she has with her parents. You have the impression, gained from the interview exchange that she has never really questioned her religious values and that she
Interpreting Information and identifying Resources seems to have completely accepted the beliefs of her parents, Brenda says that if she followed her religion more closely, she would not be having these difficulties with her parents. Results from testing during vocational assessment indicate the following: . Normal IQ . On the MMPI (Hathaway, McKinley, & Butcher, 1990), a high elevation on social introversion . On the MBTI (Myers & Briggs, 1988), scores weighted more toward introversion than extroversion, thinking than feeling . The Kuder DD shows high scores on Scientific, Clerical, and Artistic the Self-Directed Search indicates elevated scores on Realistic and Investigative areas • Achievement measures indicating average functioning in the com- putational area 1. What are some special concerns that may arise in test inter- pretation with this consumer? 2. How would you engage the consumer in the process of seek- ing occupational information, following directions suggested by the test results? 3. Outline your test interpretation approach, assuming that it is going to be difficult to engage this consumer in rehabilitation planning.
