A 75-year-old woman comes to the physician because of a burning, itching sensation on the right side of her chest for 7 days and a rash in this same area for the past 3 days. Her temperature is 37.3°C (99.1°F). Examination shows clustered skin lesions overlying two ribs near the right axillary line in the mid-thorax and on the back near the right scapula.
