A 23-year-old woman, who was diagnosed with Sjogren syndrome 6 years ago, comes to the physician because she has had burning pain in her toes for the past month. She rates the pain as a 3 on a 10-point scale. She uses capsaicin cream as needed for the pain, which has produced partial relief. Medical history is otherwise unremarkable. Vital signs are within normal limits. Neurologic examination shows decreased perception of temperature over the feet bilaterally. Sensation to vibration, proprioception, reflexes, muscle strength, muscle tone, and bulk are normal. Which of the following neurotransmitters is most likely mediating this patient's pain?

A. v-Am inobutyric acid
B. Dopamine
C. Enkephalin
D. Serotonin
E. SubstanceP
