A space probe of mass 2000 kg is cruising through space at a
speed of 1500 m/sec when an explosion occurs, blowing the space
probe into three pieces. One section, with a mass of 500 kg
is blown straight backwards with a speed of 4000 m/sec. A
second section, with a mass of 800 kg, continues forward with a
speed of 2000 m/sec.
a) What is the original momentum?
b) What are the momenta of the first and second sections?
c) Draw a momentum diagram showing the initial momentum vector and
the final momentum vectors. One final momentum vector is
unknown.
Answer: a) 3,000,000 kg·m/sec
