If you are considering entering the business field, then you maywant to choose three companies that interest you for your study. Ifyou are continuing in the academic field, you may want to choosethree schools to investigate that could match your researchinterests and goals. You might even research companies and schoolsif you are considering both as options.
This assignment involves doing research and gatheringinformation about organizations and how you might fit in with them.In addition, you will gain important, broad organizationalinformation, which is vital to anyone in the job-searchingprocess.
You should address Mark your primaryreader. Other people who are interested in similarcompanies or organizations are your secondary readers. You mustensure that you provide enough information so that the readers havethe facts to understand the type of organization that you aretargeting and how they might be relevant to you and your secondaryaudience
A minimum of four criteria arerequired. Choose criteria that is based more than onjust numbers and statistics about an organization's financialstatus, and use ones that will help you decide if an organizationis one that you would want to join.
You should include at least one visual that youcreate (e.g., a table showing how each organizationstacks up against your criteria). The visual aid should beoriginal. It is fine to use other visual aids in your report thatare not original, but you will need to credit your sources. If youuse a table or other type of graphic summarizing your findings, itgenerally works best in the Conclusion. Be sure to label visualsand to give them informative captions. In the text, explain themain point of the visual and refer your reader to the visualitself. It also needs to convey meaningful information.
Cite all of your sources for informationproperly; use in-text citations in the report and fullreferences on a separate reference page. A website URLis not a proper citation. You should list anypersonal interviews or phone calls.Use APA or MLA formatto cite your sourcescorrectly. Suggestion: If you conduct apersonal or telephone interview, you should write a short email orletter of appreciation afterward. This is the professional thing todo. A minimum of six sources arerequired.
The Format
Use a memo format and the lengthshould be a minimum of three pages not including the referencespage. Use the Style Guide provided forthis program for the format requirements for headings and spacing,as well as font. I also provide notes in the online readings forhow to format a memo heading (e.g., using a TO:, FROM:, DATE:,SUBJECT LINE: format).
The sections and headings that should be included for Project 1are:
Introduction (Use a problem/purposestatement approach; be sure to identify your career goal; previewyour main points.)
Background of organizations (Provideanalysis of each organization that includes main service, product,or research focus; mission; public or private; multi-national;reputation; benefits; particularly interesting projects.)
Methodology (State how you conducted yourresearch and established your criteria; list the criteria withimportance justified and fully explained.) You can rank thecriteria and that may help in your evaluation scoring.
Evaluation of organizations (Organize bycriterion or by organization, and use subheadings as needed.)
Conclusion (Describes main findings.)
Recommendation (Describe the next stepthat you are considering). Includes a plan-of-action and a contactor resource for future use.
