A culvert is being designed for an arterial highway. The drainage area is determined to be 680,000mʻand consists of four different watershed areas as follows; Type of drainage surface Area Coefficient of run off 40% 25% Urban residential area Sandy soil cultivated Parks & grassy meadows Pavement, gravel surface 25% 10% The following drainage basin characteristics apply: a) Overland flow length = 0.9km b) Average runoff water speed over surface = 0.25m/s Using the rational formula determine the runoff rate for a storm of 50 yr. frequency. Assume the rainfall intensity curve is as in the figure attached. If a water speed of 2m/s is needed to maintain scour velocity and conservative design is used what is the area of the culvert needed to carry the water flow.? (Assume that the flow in the culvert is not complex and does not pond at either end.)
