Purpose The purpose of this assignment is for you to: • Draw and label floral organs and describe their function in reproduction. • Draw and label fruit parts and describe their function in reproduction. • Understand the relationship of flower, seed, and fruit. The reason we are drawing both a flower and the corresponding fruit is for you to make the connection between particular parts of the flower, notably the parts of the gynoecium, that persist to become important parts of the fruit.
Instructions If you have access to a live flower and/or fruit from the list below, you can use it for your assignment. If you do not have access to a live flower, create your drawing from photos of a flower from the internet. Choose from one of the following: Orange, almond, tulip, rose, or blueberry Identify the plant by its scientific name with correct formatting/stylization and search the internet for photos or diagrams of the flower and fruit. Flower drawing Draw a diagram of the flower using information from at least two separate internet sites and identify the floral parts that are attached at each of the four whorls. You must diagram a partially dissected flower to be able to clearly show the androecium and gynoecium, and their internal parts. Use all of

You must diagram a partially dissected flower to be able to clearly show the androecium and gynoecium, and their internal parts. Use all of the following labels in your diagram (Androecium, Stamen, Filament, Anther, Calyx, Carpel, Corolla, Gynoecium, Locule, Ovary and the Ovary Wall, Ovule, Peduncle, Perianth, Petals, Pistil, Receptacle, Sepals, Stigma, and Style). If you can not use one or more of these terms, describe how it/they is/are not present in this plant. As best as you can, show us the ovary wall, locule, and the ovules. Fruit drawing Search the internet for photos and diagrams of the fruit that is bisected (cut open) through the center of the fruit if you cannot cut open a live fruit. See the example of the bisected strawberry fruit at the beginning of the assignment. Draw a diagram of the bisected fruit using information from at least two separate internet sites or other sources of information, and identify the fruit parts. Be sure to identify the important external and internal parts of fruit. Use all of the following labels in your diagram (Locule, Ovary, Ovule, Exocarp, Mesocarp, Endocarp, Seed, Seed coat, Receptacle, and Peduncle). If you can not use one (or more) of these terms while labeling your diagram, describe how/why each is not present in this fruit. You can either 1) draw this directly in your document/file, or 2) draw it on a piece of
You can either 1) draw this directly in your document/file, or 2) draw it on a piece of paper, photograph it, and paste the photo into your submission. Color diagrams are not required, but may help you to distinguish the parts. What you will submit Arrange all of your work in a document, either a Google Doc or Word file and submit the Google Doc URL or a PDF. You can save a Word file as a PDF when you go to "Save As." If submitting a Google Doc, make sure to set the sharing so Anyone with the link can edit. Here's a list of what should be in the document that you submit for this assignment: 1. Scientific name of your selected plant, using correct stylization. (1 point) 2. Provide the URL address/links from your browser for the internet references (you need at least two) you used to draw the
references (you need at least two) you used to draw the flower/fruit. (1 point) 3. Your diagram or a photo of your diagram that shows all of the labels with arrows pointing to the correct flower and fruit parts. You must use all of the labels and place them appropriately. The labels for the flower include: Androecium, Stamen, Filament, Anther, Calyx, Carpel, Corolla, Gynoecium, Locule, Ovary and the ovary wall, Ovule, Peduncle, Perianth, Petals, Pistil, Receptacle, Sepals, Stigma, and Style. For some structures you may need to show a cut or section through the flower.
