STSE Connections: RFID Technology In this course, you will be asked to connect your learning to a broader context. Many of the concepts you are learning about have an impact on your daily life, but also involve cultural, political, economic, and environmental issues that affect all of society. You have been introduced to radio-frequency identification technology (RFID) in this learning activity. Your task is to research more about the technology, its uses, and the issues surrounding privacy of information. After doing so, you are asked to revisit the T-chart that you created at the start of the learning activity. Revise your T-chart to reflect your new knowledge of this topic. Question: What are the privacy concerns with RFID technology? Research Your may choose to do your research using the Internet or other sources on this topic. Topics that need to be researched: 1. What is the physics involved in producing RFID technology? 2. What are the security and privacy concems involved in RFID technology? 3. What are the multiple viewpoints/perspectives that exist on this issue? Be sure to include which stakeholders are involved and what their viewpoints are. Often, there are multiple stakeholders involved be sure to include all the perspectives.

Opinion Learning how to express your opinion on such matters is very important. Many people do this by posting their own blog or making online comments on news stories. It may be important to you that a particular person knows your opinion. One of the best ways to do this is through a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, or to a particular government official, such as your mayor or municipal councilor, your provincial MPP or your federal MP. You will have an opportunity to practice writing letters and using arguments to support your opinion throughout this course. Your supporting arguments must be • Factual • Clearly explained Related directly to your opinion • Supported using more than one point Typically, a full answer to an opinion question requires three to five pieces of support. You want the audience to take your opinion seriously, so you need to follow the rules required. You might even complete a cost-benefit analysis before writing your letter. Your analysis and opinion on the issue you choose needs to be presented in a way that allows for someone not taking this course to understand the material. It will be helpful to include the following components: 1. Introduction to the question posed in this task 2. Brief presentation how RFI works 3. State the various stakeholders and present each of their perspectives on the issue 4. State the issues related to political, economic, environmental, and health factors 5. Your opinion and explanation
